Web Marketing

Web marketing. I guess that sums it up.. Or is it Online Marketing.. Internet Marketing? Interactive Marketing?? Who knows. Anyway when we refer to “Web Marketing” we basically mean just that - Marketing on the web and all it entails. Next questing is how does one exactly market on the web? Well, a lot of people know the answer to that, but oddly enough a lot still have no idea. Let me break it down very quickly. I will blog about this often, so here is a quick summery of the top of my head:

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) - A very broad term, but what this basically means is “Marketing your website to the search engines.” Making it “Search Engine Friendly”. Luckily, depending on who you ask, it is becoming easier to do this because search engines are becoming smarter. They are beginning to think like us. What this means is we can now ask ourselves - “how do I like to find things?” “How are the books in my library arranged”, “How are the clothes in my dresser organized?” Questions like this are what search engineers are trying to answer via search results. Therefor, when partaking in an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) effort, we too have to think this way. That leads me into SEO..

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - SEO has to be my favorite part of Web Marketing mainly because it just seems to make sense. A search engine (I’ll use Google as an example) finds what we want it to find. If you type in the keyword “Best sushi restaurant in Boston, MA” you most likely are looking for the best ranked sushi restaurant in Boston. If the results return the nearest mini-golf course, you will probably be confused, and discouraged. Google’s main goal is for that to NEVER happen. The ideal situation for them would be that the results return the BEST ranked sushi restaurant in Boston from number 1 - 500 (how many there may be with a web presence, of coarse.) And this will happen. So as marketers, we must know that we cannot trick the engines any longer. In the short term we may see higher results, but over time Google will make sure that the most relevant site appears first in the results. Clients can rest easy knowing this as well, because what that means is that the company that they work with has to help them develop an overall marketing plan to make the best site they can from the get-go. That means from design, to copy-writing, to web marketing and beyond. If they can find a company that understands this, success is imminent.

That’s all I have for now. As I find myself deeper down the rabbit hole of Social Media, I’ll expand on that next.
